Even the women who still choose to be housewives I’m sure are grateful for a helping hand. So, what is the overall opinion of men in the kitchen? A massive YES!
Ask a woman in the 1950’s what would be the most improbable scenario; landing on the moon or a male working a gas hob? Whatever her answer, she would be wrong since both has been miraculously achieved! It’s only taken 60+ years, but what was once an unseen phenomenon is now the commonplace mundane – men in the kitchen.
For the modern day generations, men and women alike are now quite desensitised to this once scandalous concept. What with the rise of popular cultural icons such as Jamie Oliver, Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay quite shamelessly whipping up culinary delights more delicious than the average female could ever hope to replicate, live on international television for the masses, has certainly taken away any remaining stigma of men belonging in a garage rather than a kitchen. It’s not just women who had to work hard to bust this stereotype; those poor men who just wanted to make a puff pastry casserole with their own hands have had to journey long and hard to reach where they are today too.
Other shows like Come Dine With Me have also shown to be extremely influential in creating more interest in men to pick up a ladle. Every show has four or five participants containing at least one or two men who are dinner party and cook enthusiasts, sometimes even three! Not only does this make the show more appealing for men to watch (as I doubt they would be much interested watching an all-female dinner party nattering and clucking away all night long), but it also shows other men that every type of man has the potential to be a great cook. From builders to drag queens, students to corporate businessmen, Come Dine With Me has seen every age and brand of male imaginable on their screen, showing to men everywhere that it is possible and even encouraged for them to cook now.
Not only that, but social trends and the kitchen have also been continually examined, analysed and bombarded with new progressive attitudes by other sources such as cookery blogs, books and newspaper articles –check out the Sunday Morning Herald’s take on it! The more this issue has been brought to the surface in recent decades, the more and more men have been revealing a secret talent for asparagus chopping and more. Now that the House Husband is also being increasingly established the rise of men in the kitchen is an unstoppable and brilliant force.
Of course, there will always be men of the old stock with more traditional opinions, and would rather build a wardrobe than a chocolate fondant and strawberry trifle dessert platter, but it cannot be denied that there has been a significant shift in outlook for a lot of men. The increase in male attention to the kitchen is ever more visible, so we women are no longer chained to the oven door.
I mean, let’s face it people, this has been quite the liberation movement for both sexes. Where men were not allowed in the kitchen, women were not allowed out of it (unless it was to clean the house or wipe up baby snot). So for the new modern busy career driven woman it is quite the relief to have a helping hand from her other half. Even the women who still choose to be housewives I’m sure are grateful for a helping hand. So, what is the overall opinion of men in the kitchen? For me it is a massive YES!
